This little fridge worked great for us for about a year. We bought this for our basement because the layout of our kitchen does not allow for a larger sized refrigerator, and as a family of 5 we needed extra space. After about a year, the ice was overtaking the freezer and the bottom compartment was not cooling at all no matter how cold we had the settings. Spoiled a lot of food for us and the ice is so thick on the freezer bottom, I™€™m not sure I™€™ll ever be able to get it up. I came here to see if there was a manual and if I had the settings incorrect, and instead found other owners of this fridge with the same problem going back for YEARS. Very disappointed.

Unfair treatment to the customer

Model no.: WRT112CZJW. Serial no.: VSF1369305. I purchased this fridge via Home Depot. It was delivered on May the 7th. Within one week it has failed; there was no cooling. Technician came and discovered the failure of compressor. The parts was ordered. Another tech came today, 6/24, and just when he was ready to replace the compressor he found a leak on the pipe connected to it. He said the leak was causing the failure. He has ordered the parts and there will be another 14 days. For a brand new fridge that has to go through that kind of repairs, we feel entirely dissatisfied. I called Whirlpool for a replacement of machine and received a flat refusal: we have to suffer prolonged repairs. This is very unfair to the customer, to say the least. It appears there is no justice because we just cannot get to the level where a replacement decision is made. Please help.

Cooling is good. Manufacture is good. Configuration of the freezer is awkward. I have to put something under the pizza boxes to left them high enough to clear the shelf on the door in order for the door to close. Awkward. Shelves in the refrigerator door are also awkward. I ordered an additional door shelf (which was a complicated process) to get additional storage. Now the shelves are too close together to use for a half-gallon milk carton or a wine bottle. Delivery went well.

I am disgusted ™€" What worth does a refrigerator have if it is incapable of keeping products cool. I bought this unit a few months back and wish I would have kept the packaging so I could return it. Too soon to tell to give a complete rating. I have only had this frig for 1 week; so far so good. I only had 1 issue with ice cream softening but decreased freezer temp ice cream seems more frozen. This is a basic model in basement for overflow items. I like the looks, the door shelving on both freezer & frig doors and the size of the produce bin. The freezer is a nice size, too, for overflow. I haven't had the issues of ice build up or water on shelves. I chose Whirlpool because the previous overflow was also this brand and it lasted nearly 50 yrs.!!! Amazing. Fingers crossed for this one.

Size and shelves good, thermostat not so good

I bought this for the size and I like the external coils on the back for ease of cleaning. The shelves inside and door bins are good. The undesirable feature is the thermostat. First the directions are not that clear on setting the temperature. A simple dial where a person can tweak the temperature to get it more precise than having leds to select for a not so accurate temperature selection. The thermostat was very temperamental to start with. I set it colder and it went back to the default setting. I selected my setting multiple times before it finally agreed with me. It appears as if the temperature in the fridge has to get fairly warm before the unit starts cooling again. It seems to be a fairly wide band width from the set point to the time it gets warm enough to cool again. If I get another fridge, I will definitely look at how the thermostat is set up. I had a failed old refrigerator and was able to find this locally as a replacement. Not many options at the time. I had to reverse the door and make some adjustments with some washers at the hinge point to get it to seal properly. It is really difficult to say if I would buy this refrigerator again based on the type of thermostat in it.

Couldn™€™t get the freezer to the recommended 0 to -10°F after months of trying. Things were mostly frozen but the ice cream was never truly solid. Then the unit started building up ice in the refrigerator compartment on the top shelf in the middle that would subsequently melt and propagate to every shelf before pooling in the bottom to the point of overflowing. Defrosted completely to room temp and aired out with dehumidifier for 24 hours to ensure it was bone dry inside and out. Restarted and reloaded both compartments. Now freezer makes frost and is colder than -20°F my fridge/freezer thermometer registers and fridge portion won™€™t cool. Defrosting again. It™€™s supposed to be ™€œfrost free.™€ Sigh. Lastly, vegetable bin has no track or glides. Operates like a sticky cardboard box more than a proper drawer.

Air flow control ineffective

Freeze up and defrost problem at least partially caused by defective air flow control in freezer. The knob becomes detached from the nylon "butterfly" inside the panel and little to no cold air goes to the refrigerator. The coils behind that panel in the freezer become blocks of ice. I tried to explain this earlier but not sure if my review was accepted.

Defrost problems caused by air flow control

I was surprised to find my Whirlpool was made in Mexico using more lightweight plastic materials than one would have seen from this brand a few years ago. It does take less space in my resigned small kitchen and serves its purpose without hard use. The defrost problem is an engineering fault, part of which is fairly easy to fix if you are a do-it-yourselfer. First, place a bath towel in the bottom of the fridge and have more on hand. The back of the freezer compartment has two plastic plugs hiding 1/4 inch screws that hold it together. Pry those plugs out and remove the screws, carefully tilt the panel toward you and disconnect the two electrical wires (could be longer). The panel pulls upward and out from the styrofoam (too cheap guys) air passage between the freezer and refrigerator sections. The key to the defrost problem is the very poorly designed air flow control inside that panel. The knob doesn't stay connected to that nylon "butterfly" so the min/max control becomes a decoration. This causes the cold air to remain in the freezer and little to none gets to the refrigerator. If you can remove the screws holding the two panel sides together enough to reattached the knob to the butterfly-type air control very firmly (I inserted a small block of wood to tap the two together), then replace the panel sides screws. Defrost the coils with a hair dryer while you have it apart. Gently insert the freezer panel into the air passage while refastening the two electrical wires. Push it into place and replace the two 1/4 inch screws and covers. If you have melted the ice and mopped all the water from the freezer and the refrigerator floor you can reconnect to the wall plug. Turn your newly reconnected knob to low. Never block the air flow vents in the back of the freezer with food or otherwise overcrowd it so that the cold air cannot circulate. This may solve the freeze up and defrost problem for a while. Good luck.

Do not buy this refrigerator. It requires defrosting every 1-2 months because of the single unit cooler. It has to use air From the freezer to cool the refrigerator below. It worked fine for the first 6 months, but now the freezer fails to cool the fridge below and food spoils unless you defrost the entire fridge. The worst appliance purchase we have ever made.

What we needed

Needed a new device to fit in a certain spot in the pantry. The old "no-name" refrigerator died but it did fit yhe space perfectly. After researching options, this refrigerator also fit the space. While I am happy with it, the only downside is that the shelves are not quite as adjustable as I'd like.

Drips water and freezes all the time

Requires CONSTANT defrosting. Drips water inside and then freezes. The freezer door even freezes shut. The fridge is only a year old.

PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE Purchased this unit in late 2022 and have had nothing but problems. Please read all the one star ratings not others that may be fabricated to raise average ratings.. We've had all the problems from low Fridge temps to the Freezer turning into a block of ice to water in the bottom of the fridge and compressor failure. We lost $100s of food. It is simply the WORST FRIDGE WE'VE EVER OWNED. This is not the Whirlpool of old and they should be ashamed to produce such an inferior product. (Serial is VSB1158282).

A week old and stopped running, unplugged it for 20 minutes and started again, ran for 10 seconds. Called to get it repaired or replaced and now it is working again. See what happens in a couple days, I loved the last one I had, lasted around 15 years.

Totally Not Expexted From Whirlpool

I purchased directly from Whirlpool my brand-new refrigerator with a 5-year extended warranty in June 2023. Beginning in Oct 2024, approximately 3 months after Manufacturer warranty expired, the freezer stopped freezing and water pooling on refrigerator shelves all the way down under the vegetable bin. I have been without use of a refrigerator since Oct and currently fast approaching Thanksgiving. I am now 2 technicians deep with a laundry list of parts to be ordered. Multiple calls to Whirlpool. Multiple emails sent both to service provider and Whirlpool Experience and Whirlpool Consumer Correspondence Team with a classic response that we are sorry for your experience, if don't hear anything within the week call/email/chat us back. Issues

I wish the fridge had a dial, like the freezer does, to set the temperature. Instead, it has an electronic control board, which makes it impossible to choose a precise setting. Also, if the bottom shelf on the fridge door is at the lowest place, the door won't close unless the food on the bottom shelf of the fridge is pushed toward the back.
